The DP charge is the fee that arrives after you sell.
It is levied per scrip, per day, on a debit from your demat account, and it is the line most brokerage tables leave out. Here is what fifteen brokers publish on their own pages, read on 16 September 2026, with the sell-side arithmetic worked out in full.
What a DP charge is, precisely
One trigger, one unit, and a fixed set of situations where it does not apply at all.
A DP charge is levied by your depository participant, the broker’s depository arm, when securities are debited from your demat account. The unit is one scrip, so the number of debits decides the bill.
Charged on a debit
A sale of delivery shares, and an off-market transfer out of the account. Both raise a debit instruction, and the charge attaches to it.
Not charged on a credit
A buy credits shares into the account, and credits are not debited. Intraday is squared off in the trading account, so no shares are delivered. Futures and options in our data set settle in cash, and Angel One publishes explicitly that no DP charge applies to equity intraday, equity futures or equity options trades.
Per scrip, per day
Sell five different companies in one day and five debits are created, so you pay the charge five times. The same scrip sold in three orders on one day raises a single debit; sold again the next day, it raises a fresh one. TradeSmart Online publishes ₹15 per scrip per day, fixed irrespective of the number of orders in a day, and Zerodha describes ₹15.34 per scrip on sell, irrespective of quantity.
At most brokers, not proportional to the sale
₹20 plus GST is the same whether the scrip you sold was worth ₹5,000 or ₹5,00,000. Two brokers in our set publish a value-linked version instead: Kotak Securities charges 0.04% of the value of the assets with a minimum of ₹20, and Axis Direct charges 0.04% of the transaction value or ₹25 per instruction, whichever is higher.
For the wider picture of what a demat account costs beyond this one line, our guide to demat account charges sets the DP charge next to AMC, opening cost and brokerage, and the plain description of the DP charge covers the concept without the table.
The two layers inside the charge
A depository fee, the broker’s own fee on top, and 18% GST on both. Three brokers in our set publish all three parts.
Every DP charge has the same skeleton. The depository charges the depository participant a per-debit fee: CDSL publishes ₹3.5 for a male holder and ₹3.25 for a female holder, the ₹0.25 difference also applying to mutual fund and bond ISINs at the brokers that mention it. The depository participant then adds its own charge, and 18% GST applies to the total. What most brokers publish is only the resulting single figure.
| Broker | Depository fee | Broker’s own fee | GST | Total per scrip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upstox | CDSL ₹3.5 (₹3.25 female) | ₹16.5 | 18%, ₹3.60 | ₹23.60 |
| Zerodha | CDSL ₹3.5 | ₹9.5 | ₹2.34, included | ₹15.34 |
| Groww | CDSL ₹3.5 (₹3.25 female) | ₹16.5, nil under ₹100 debit | 18%, ₹3.60 | ₹23.60 male |
One published total includes GST, the others do not
Zerodha’s published ₹15.34 already includes GST, while Upstox’s ₹20 and Groww’s ₹20 are before it. At 18%, ₹20 becomes ₹23.60. A table that lists ₹15.34 next to ₹20 without saying which includes tax makes the two look closer or further apart than they are.
Every other broker in our set publishes one figure with no split, so the depository portion inside it cannot be verified from that broker’s own pages.
| Broker | What is published | What is missing |
|---|---|---|
| Angel One | ₹20 plus GST | The depository portion inside the ₹20 |
| 5paisa | ₹20 plus GST | The depository portion inside the ₹20 |
| Fyers | ₹12.5 plus GST, with the parts named: ₹3.5 CDSL plus ₹9 FYERS | Nothing on the split, the one flat-figure broker that names the parts |
| Alice Blue | ₹15 plus GST | The depository portion inside the ₹15 |
| ProStocks | ₹20 plus 18% GST | The depository portion inside the ₹20 |
| TradeSmart Online | ₹15 plus GST per scrip per day. Its FAQ states only that the ₹15 includes the CDSL charges | The depository figure inside the ₹15 |
| Paytm Money | ₹20 per delivery sell order, including CDSL charges of ₹3.50, on tables headed rate excluding GST | The broker’s own fee as a separate figure |
| Share.Market | ₹18.50 per instruction per ISIN, including a CDSL charge of ₹3.25, with a smaller tier of ₹3.50 where the transaction value is under ₹100 | The broker’s own fee as a separate figure |
| HDFC Sky | ₹20 per demat transaction, and no tax basis | The tax basis, and the depository portion inside the ₹20 |
| ICICI Direct | ₹20 plus GST, naming only the depository portion: ₹4 under NSDL and ₹3.5 under CDSL | Its own retained share |
That is not a criticism of any of them: a single combined figure is a legitimate way to publish a fee. But the depository portion inside those figures cannot be verified from the broker’s own page, and this page does not fill that gap with a guess. Your monthly statement is the place to look, because it itemises what was deducted.
The DP charge, broker by broker
Fifteen brokers that publish a DP figure, with the charges that sit around it. Every figure checked on 16 September 2026.
One disclosure before the numbers. DematOpen is an Authorized Person of Upstox, and we earn only when an account opens through this site. You pay nothing extra for that, and the DP charge on an account opened through this site is the one on Upstox’s published rate card. Every DP figure below comes from the broker’s own pricing page on the date stated, and the three brokers whose figure we could not verify are named immediately after the table rather than dropped from the page.
The DP charge is the last column. The columns before it are there because a DP charge is never the only fee on a sale: brokerage is charged on the order, and AMC from year two applies in a year when you sell nothing. A cell reading “Not published” means the broker does not publish that figure on the page we read.

DP figures as published by each broker, checked on 16 September 2026. Published rates, checked 16 September 2026. “(lower)” means whichever is lower. “Not published” means the broker does not publish it; it is not an estimate. Statutory charges apply on top at every broker.
Three brokers in our set publish no DP figure, so they are not in the table, and no figure is printed for them: a guessed number would be worse than the blank.
| Broker | What is published | What is missing |
|---|---|---|
| Stoxkart | No DP charge on its pricing page | The DP charge |
| BlinkX | No DP charge and no timing statement on its charges page | The DP charge and the timing statement |
| Indiabulls Securities | The DP charge question in the FAQ on its pricing page | The answer: the question is carried but the answer is not shown |
If you hold an account with one of them, your own statement is the record of what was deducted.
The flat figures cluster between ₹12.5 and ₹20 per scrip before GST, which puts the all-in cost with tax between roughly ₹14.75 and ₹23.60 depending on the broker.
Three sells, worked line by line
One scrip sold at ₹10,000, five scrips sold on one day, and a small debit on the Groww threshold, each with the statutory stack beside it.
STT on equity delivery is 0.1% of the value and is charged on both sides, so a sell carries it, while stamp duty is buy side only, so a sell does not carry it at all. The NSE transaction charge is 0.00307% per trade from 1 March 2026. The SEBI turnover fee is ₹10 per crore and IPFT is ₹0.01 per crore. GST at 18% applies to brokerage, transaction charges, SEBI fees, IPFT and the DP charge.
Those rates come from Upstox’s own rate card, read on 16 September 2026.
| One scrip sold at ₹10,000 | Upstox | Zerodha | Groww |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brokerage | ₹20.00 | ₹0.00 | ₹10.00 |
| DP charge, per scrip | ₹20.00 | ₹15.34 incl. GST | ₹20.00 |
| STT 0.1%, sell side | ₹10.00 | ₹10.00 | ₹10.00 |
| Stamp duty (buy side only) | Nil | Nil | Nil |
| NSE transaction 0.00307% | ₹0.31 | ₹0.31 | ₹0.31 |
| SEBI turnover ₹10/crore | ₹0.01 | ₹0.01 | ₹0.01 |
| GST 18% | ₹7.26 | ₹0.06 | ₹5.46 |
| Total | ₹57.58 | ₹25.72 | ₹45.78 |
The GST line differs by column. Upstox charges 18% on the ₹20 brokerage, the ₹20 DP charge, the ₹0.31 transaction charge and the ₹0.01 SEBI fee, which is ₹7.26. Groww charges 18% on ₹10 brokerage, ₹20 DP, ₹0.31 and ₹0.01, which is ₹5.46.
Zerodha charges 18% only on the transaction charge and the SEBI fee, because its brokerage is zero and its ₹15.34 DP figure already includes its own GST, which is why the line reads ₹0.06.
Upstox’s ₹57.58 on a ₹10,000 sale is dominated by two fixed charges, ₹20 of brokerage and ₹20 of DP charge. Zerodha’s ₹25.72 is roughly half DP charge and half statutory. On a sale this size, the choice of broker moves the total by ₹31.86 between the highest and the lowest column.
| Five scrips sold, ₹10,000 each | Upstox | Zerodha | Groww |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brokerage, five orders | ₹100.00 | ₹0.00 | ₹50.00 |
| DP charge, five scrips | ₹100.00 | ₹76.70 | ₹100.00 |
| STT 0.1% on ₹50,000 | ₹50.00 | ₹50.00 | ₹50.00 |
| NSE transaction 0.00307% | ₹1.54 | ₹1.54 | ₹1.54 |
| SEBI turnover ₹10/crore | ₹0.05 | ₹0.05 | ₹0.05 |
| GST 18% | ₹36.29 | ₹14.09 | ₹27.29 |
| Total | ₹287.88 | ₹142.38 | ₹228.88 |
The ₹50,000 sale is spread across five scrips, and the DP charge is five times the single-scrip figure: ₹100 at Upstox and Groww before GST, ₹76.70 at Zerodha. The same ₹50,000 spread across ten scrips would pay it ten times, and in one scrip it would pay once.
The value of the sale is the same in both cases; the count of debits is not. That is why the number of lines on your sell order matters more to this charge than the size of the order.
| A small sale at Groww | ₹99 debit | ₹100 debit |
|---|---|---|
| Sale value | ₹99.00 | ₹100.00 |
| Brokerage (₹5 minimum applies) | ₹5.00 | ₹5.00 |
| DP charge, Groww portion | Nil, under ₹100 | ₹16.50 |
| DP charge, depository portion | ₹3.50 | ₹3.50 |
| STT 0.1%, sell side | ₹0.10 | ₹0.10 |
| GST 18% | ₹1.53 | ₹4.50 |
| Total | ₹10.13 | ₹29.60 |
Groww’s published threshold is a debit value under ₹100, where the Groww portion of the DP charge is nil and only the depository fee applies. At ₹99 the total comes to ₹10.13, which is 10% of the sale value, because three fixed charges are stacked on a very small trade: the ₹5 minimum brokerage, the ₹3.50 depository fee and the GST on both.
At exactly ₹100 the debit is no longer under ₹100 on the published wording, so the ₹16.50 Groww portion applies and the total rises to ₹29.60. If a sale of yours lands on that line, confirm the charge on Groww’s pricing page before you place the order.
Read those two columns as a general lesson: small sales are expensive in percentage terms at every broker, because the fixed parts of the bill do not shrink with the order. Share.Market publishes a comparable small-value tier, ₹3.50 per instruction per ISIN where the transaction value is under ₹100, and the ₹2 minimum brokerage on its equity rows applies on top.
How to reduce DP charges legitimately
What genuinely helps, what merely moves the cost, and what does nothing at all.
Sell fewer scrips
The charge is per scrip, so consolidating a sale into the scrips you actually want to exit is the one lever that changes the number directly. Five small positions sold in one day pay the charge five times, and no order type or order size avoids it.
Use the per-day rule in both directions
Splitting one scrip’s sale into three orders on the same day does not triple the charge, because the debit is raised once. Splitting it across two days does double it, because each day raises its own debit. A two-day exit from one holding pays twice where a single-day exit pays once.
What does nothing
Splitting a large order into many small ones does nothing to the DP charge, which is levied per scrip and not per order, and it can add brokerage if your broker charges per executed order. Waiting for a better price does not help either, since the charge attaches to the sale and not to the gain. Holding longer has no effect at all: the charge on a scrip held for ten years is the same as on one held for ten days.
What moves the cost rather than removing it
A broker with a lower DP charge lowers that one line, and nothing else. If the same broker charges more on brokerage, or applies an AMC you would otherwise not pay, the saving on DP charges can disappear in a year of holding. Compare the DP line with the brokerage and the AMC rather than on its own.
A pledge or unpledge is a separate line from both brokerage and the DP charge: ₹20 plus GST per scrip at Upstox and ₹15 per scrip per request plus GST at TradeSmart Online, with the mechanics in our guide to pledging shares for margin.
A corporate action, such as a buyback or an offer for sale, can create a debit or a credit of its own, covered in corporate actions in a demat account. The wider list of charges that are easy to miss on a contract note is in hidden charges to watch and the account-level costs in demat account charges. The brokerage calculator prices a specific trade rather than a general rate.
BSDA and the DP charge
One of these is capped by regulation. The other is not, and the difference catches people out.
What BSDA caps
The Basic Services Demat Account is a SEBI framework, in force since 1 September 2024, that caps the annual maintenance charge. Holdings up to ₹4 lakh mean the AMC must be nil, and between ₹4 lakh and ₹10 lakh it is capped at ₹100 per year. Above ₹10 lakh the account leaves BSDA and the regular AMC applies.
What it does not cap
BSDA limits what you can be charged for holding an account, not what you can be charged for transacting in it, so a sale from a BSDA account carries the same per-scrip DP charge as a regular account at the same broker, and selling in ten small scrips costs it ten times.
The protection, which cuts the other way
SEBI requires that a BSDA holder is not charged more than a regular account holder apart from the AMC cap, so a broker cannot apply a higher DP tariff to a BSDA account: the charge is the regular published charge, no more.
BSDA saves you the annual charge while your holdings stay inside the threshold, and it does nothing for the cost of selling: if your holdings are under ₹4 lakh, the AMC on that account should be nil, and the DP charge on each sale is whatever your broker publishes.
The AMC rules, the ₹4 lakh and ₹10 lakh thresholds and the change that took effect on 31 March 2026, when suspended, delisted and Zero Coupon Zero Principal securities stopped counting toward the threshold, are set out in full in what BSDA means for your account.
Questions people ask
The DP charge explained the same way the rest of this site explains it, from published figures only.
No. Brokerage is the broker’s fee for executing an order. A DP charge is levied by the depository participant when securities are debited from your demat account, which happens on a sale of delivery shares or on an off-market transfer. Both can appear on the same statement or contract note, which is why they get read as one charge. At Upstox, for example, delivery brokerage is ₹20 per executed order and the DP charge is ₹20 plus GST per scrip on a sale, so a sale of two scrips carries two different kinds of fee.
No. A buy credits shares into your demat account, and credits are not charged at any broker in our set. Paytm Money, Fyers and ProStocks publish nil on the buy or credit side explicitly, and the others publish a sell-side or debit-side charge only. The charge is attached to a debit, so the direction of the share movement is what decides it.
No, because those trades never debit the demat account. An intraday position is squared off in the trading account before any shares are delivered, and index futures and options, and most single-stock derivatives, settle in cash rather than by delivering shares. Angel One states on its pricing page that no DP charge applies to equity intraday, equity futures or equity options trades, and the same logic applies at the other brokers. A DP charge appears when physical delivery happens instead of a cash settlement.
Because the depository raises a debit instruction for each security that leaves your account, and the depository participant passes that structure on. Sell five different scrips in one day and five debits are created, so the charge is applied five times. Sell a single scrip worth ₹5,00,000 and one debit is created, so it is applied once. That is why the count of scrips matters more than the value of the sale.
No. BSDA caps the annual maintenance charge: nil while holdings stay under ₹4 lakh, and ₹100 per year between ₹4 lakh and ₹10 lakh. It does not cap per-transaction depository fees, so the DP charge on each sale is the same as on a regular account. SEBI’s rules do require that a BSDA holder is not charged more than a regular account apart from the AMC cap, so the DP charge in a BSDA account cannot exceed the broker’s regular tariff.
Stoxkart, BlinkX and Indiabulls Securities publish no DP charge on the pages we read on 16 September 2026. Indiabulls Securities carries the FAQ question on its pricing page but the answer is not shown, and the other two publish no DP line at all. We leave those cells out of the table rather than estimate, because a guessed charge is worse than a blank one. If you hold an account with one of them, your own statement or the broker’s support desk is the reliable source.
