Demat account for students
You do not need a salary to start investing. ₹100 a month in a mutual fund SIP, opened from your hostel room in 15 minutes. Opening is free, paperless and takes about 15 minutes.
Why students open one early
The single biggest edge you have is time. Starting five years before your first job matters more than starting with a big amount.
Start with pocket money
A ₹100 monthly SIP fits into a college budget. You can pause it any month.
Compounding works for you
Money invested at 20 has years more to grow than money invested at 30. Time is the one asset students hold in surplus.
Learn by doing, cheaply
A Demat account is free to open and free to keep for the first year. You can watch how orders work with real, small amounts.
KYC is simple
You need a PAN card and an Aadhaar linked to your mobile. Most students over 18 already have both.
How to think about it as a student
Your job is not to pick winners. It is to build the habit with money you can genuinely spare and let time do the rest. Pocket money invested monthly is the whole strategy.

What a student can start with
₹100 buys a mutual fund SIP. ₹500 buys a few shares of a company you follow. There is no minimum balance on the account itself, and no pressure to trade often.

What people usually get wrong
Three beliefs that cost this group real money. Each one has a simple fix.
You need a big amount to start
₹100 starts a SIP. The habit matters more than the amount.
Trading is how students make quick money
Most active traders lose money. Students win with time, not trades.

Five extra years of compounding beats a bigger salary later.

Questions students ask
Straight answers for first-time investors.
Yes. Brokers do not ask for income proof or employment details. You need to be 18 or older, an Indian resident, and have a PAN card and an Aadhaar linked to your mobile number. The account opens the same way for students as for anyone else.
If you are 18 or older, no. The account is entirely yours. If you are under 18, your parent or guardian opens a minor Demat account on your behalf, which you take over when you turn 18.
Most students begin with index funds or mutual fund SIPs, because they spread money across companies without needing stock-picking skill. Buying a single share of a company you already use and understand is also a common way to learn. This is a general pattern, not advice for your specific situation.
